The Polaris rear bumpers are a popular option on the RZR XP1000 and XP Turbo. Many are purchased when the RZR is sold new, and are dealer installed. There are also 50 or more different aftermarket bumpers available for the RZR from huge companies, small specialty shops, Chinese importers and built after-hours by local riders. Since the Polaris rear bumper is the most common RZR rear bumper, Thunderhawk designed this hitch specifically to fit with it. This Thunderhawk hitch also fits with some aftermarket bumpers that have a similar design. The Polaris rear bumper is a frame-mount design (see photo for frame-mount location) and it has a cross-brace between the lower bumper tubes that covers the upper radius rod mounting area. This cross-brace creates a situation where a rear receiver hitch tube must be mounted lower to clear the bumper, but then access for the transmission & rear differential fluid fill/level plug is blocked by the receiver hitch tube. One-piece hitches with a lowered receiver tube must be removed to check and fill the transmission & rear differential, which means dis-assembling the rear suspension radius rods (which is not easy or fun). Thunderhawk's two-piece hitch does not require suspension dis-assembly and removal.
Thunderhawk Performance designed this patent-pending rear receiver hitch system to eliminate this maintenance headache. We updated our double-shear radius rod support plate to function as a receiver hitch mount that can remain installed on the RZR's frame. We then built a separate receiver hitch plate that can be removed from the double-shear mounting plate on the frame for routine maintenance to gain access to the transmission & rear differential fluid fill/level plug. Just remove a few bolts and the receiver hitch comes off, leaving the double- shear mounting plate in-place and the rear suspension radius rods remain installed so the RZR can be driven as usual with the hitch removed.
Thunderhawk's double-shear radius rod support plate design is the key to this hitch system. The Thunderhawk double-shear plate replaces the original four-bolt radius rod stiffener plate and features additional frame mounting points (at both the top and bottom) to securely mount the plate directly to the frame without relying only on the four radius rod bolts for mounting. This design strengthens the radius rods and frame by creating a second frame mount for the rear of the radius rods so they are now supported on both the front (through the stock frame) and the rear (through the Thunderhawk double-shear plate), doubling the strength of the radius rod mounting bolts. This eliminates damaging frame flex and stops the occurence of deforming, elongating (egging-out) and cracking around the radius rod mounting holes in the RZR XP 1000 / XP Turbo frame. Using this Thunderhawk system, towing loads are transferred from the receiver hitch plate, through the double-shear mounting plate directly to the frame to provide superior strength and eliminate damage to the radius rod bolts. Thunderhawk's double-shear mounting design provides a major benefit by increasing frame and suspension strength even when you unhook the trailer and hit the trails.
Now, let's talk about fitment. Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitches feature direct frame mounting through our double-shear plate (that's why you're looking at these over the cheesy hitches that only mount using the four radius rod bolts, right?). Because of this, fitment of the Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitches is affected by the width of the radius rods (where the bolt passes through at the frame end). Polaris has used two different styles of factory-installed radius rods on the RZR - their standard, straight radius rods (1 3/8" wide) and their High-Clearance radius rods (1 3/4" wide). We make hitches to fit both. If you have either of these stock radius rods, we know what you need - Just select your vehicle & options and we'll send the correct hitch for your RZR. There are also dozens of aftermarket radius rods which may be 1 3/8" wide, 1 3/4" wide or some other odd-ball dimension. If you have stock radius rods now, but may upgrade them to aftermarket radius rods later, that's no problem - just be sure to verify that the aftermarket radius rods you buy are the same width as the ones that you currently have. The most common odd-ball dimensions occur when a company includes a flat four-bolt plate with their radius rods to replace the factory-installed formed four-bolt plate (and then they add spacers to make the flat plate fit). If the width of these radius rods (without the spacer) matches your current radius rods, then the add-on spacers used on the lower radius rods can usually be removed so that they will fit with the Thunderhawk hitch (which is formed properly to match the Polaris frame without spacers). To assure that you receive the correct hitch for any RZR that is equipped with aftermarket radius rods, we ask that you provide the measurement of your radius rods (see photo) when ordering.
OK, we're almost done with fitment. Rear bumpers can also create issues with any rear hitch. If you've selected this hitch on our website beacuase the title says "fits with Polaris rear bumper", and you have a Polaris rear bumper, then you're all set - order when ready! But, what about the guy who's reading this because he has some aftermarket bumper that is designed in a way to cause problems with finding a hitch? Well, we can usually help with that problem too. If you have a frame-mount bumper like the Polaris bumper (see photo to identify frame-mount location), and your bumper has a cross-tube down low (like the Polaris bumper, but NOT any lower than 1 1/2" below the center of the upper radius rod bolts), then this hitch should work. If you have a bumper with a large plate that covers the whole rear area (where this receiver hitch tube is located), then you're out-of-luck. If you have one of those bumpers that has a lower mount that uses a four-bolt plate to replace the factory radius rod plate, then you can't fit any hitch (you probably also want to get rid of that bumper before you hit something and damage your rear suspension). We've intentionally kept this "bumper fitment" section short, call if you have further questions.
Thunderhawk hitches feature a durable black powdercoat finish and are constructed using an automotive-grade, reinforced receiver tubes for strength, durability and proper fitment with your towing accessories. We've also added double gussets to eliminate deflection of the receiver tube when towing, and the factory tow point is accessible too. The tongue weight rating for this hitch is 150 lbs. The Thunderhawk rear hitch installs in about 60-90 minutes. This hitch does NOT fit RZR XP Turbo S (72" wide model) or RS-1 (single-seat), but we do offer hitches for these under their respective vehicle sections. Made in USA.
Thunderhawk Performance receiver hitches accept standard 2" automotive receiver hitch components. 2" receiver hitches are commonly used on most pick-up trucks. Many people already own these hitch bars and components, but these parts are also readily available at any large discount store or auto parts chain.

Receiver hitch
It went on relatively easy. I recommend that you remove the muffler guard to put the L bracket on, and to use a crows foot wrench to tighten the lower bolts.
