Thunderhawk's patent-pending double-shear radius rod support plate design is the key to building the strongest RZR XP Turbo-S rear receiver hitch. This Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch replaces the original radius rod stiffener plate and features additional frame mounting points (at both the top and bottom) to securely mount the hitch directly to the frame without relying only on the four radius rod bolts for mounting. By mounting the hitch to the frame in this fashion, towing loads are transferred directly to the frame to provide superior strength and eliminate damage to the radius rod bolts, while upgrading the radius rods to a double-shear mount for increased suspension strength. In addition to these common Thunderhawk features, we also offer the only hitch designed and manufactured with the proper compound angles to match the factory RZR XP Turbo-S frame & radius rods. Other flat or 2D-formed hitch plates sold for the Turbo-S produce joint face angularity issues (the radius rod bolts heads are stressed and fail), while the design of this Thunderhawk hitch eliminates these problems.
What's joint face angularity? Well, would you put a bolt into a plate crooked (so that only one side of the bolt head touches), and then tighten it down? When you tighten it down, it'll "tighten-up" and the head will touch all around, right? Well....maybe? But you've just deformed the shank of the bolt, just below the head, and that bolt will fail right there. Not right away, but it will in time (probably at the worst possible time). Joint face angularity is a design problem that causes these failures to occur. But, nobody would do that.... And yet so many people have done exactly that, when they have purchased an improperly-designed hitch. Like the RZR XP 1000 & XP Turbo, the RZR XP Turbo-S has the radius rod bolts located in two planes, with the upper radius rods positioned farther back (farther behind the lower radius rods). But, the RZR XP Turbo-S is unique in that the radius rods are also angled, so the left and right radius rod bolts are not parrallel to each other. Thunderhawk is the only hitch that is designed with compound angles to properly match the XP Turbo-S frame and factory angles so that you do not have these problems.
Thunderhawk's double-shear mounting plate upgrades the stock RZR suspension from a single-shear radius rod mount to a much stronger double- shear design. Thunderhawk's double-shear mount creates a second frame mount for the radius rods that is securely attached directly to the frame to support the rear of the radius rods. With the radius rods now supported on both the front (through the stock frame) and the rear (through the Thunderhawk double-shear hitch plate), we have doubled the strength of the radius rod mounts, eliminating damaging frame flex and stopping the problem of deforming, elongating (egging-out) & cracking around the radius rod mounting holes in the RZR frame. Thunderhawk's double-shear design provides a major benefit by increasing frame and suspension strength even when you unhook the trailer and hit the trails.
The Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch features a differential fluid service access hole so that you can easily check and top-off differential fluid without having to remove the hitch. Thunderhawk's exclusive double-shear mounting plate design makes this the strongest hitch available for the RZR XP Turbo-S, as it does not apply additional strain to the four radius rod bolts by adding the towing load to these bolts but instead mounts to the vehicle frame to apply towing loads directly to the frame. This design also strengthens the radius rods and the rear frame at the same time. Rear suspension work is also made much easier as the radius rods can now be removed and re-installed easily.
Now, let's talk about fitment. Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitches feature direct frame mounting through our double-shear plate (that's why you started looking at these over the cheesy hitches that only mount using the four radius rod bolts, right?). Because of this, fitment of the Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitch is affected by the width of the radius rods (where the bolt passes through at the frame end). If you have stock radius rods, we know what you need and our XP Turbo-S hitch will fit perfectly. Most aftermarket radius rods will also be the stock width. If you have stock-width aftermarket radius rods, you're good-to-go with this hitch - so order whenever you're ready! If you have stock radius rods now, but may upgrade them to aftermarket radius rods later, that's no problem either - just be sure to verify that the aftermarket radius rods you buy are stock-width. There may also be aftermarket radius rods that are made to non-stock dimensions, which will not fit with this Thunderhawk hitch. If you have aftermarket radius rods that required longer bolts for installation, this hitch may not fit and you should verify dimensions of your radius rod compared to the original radius rods (we wish we could just list all of the odd-ball radius rods, but this changes weekly as fly-by-night guys come and go).
OK, we're almost done with fitment. Rear bumpers can also create issues with any rear hitch. No bumper - No problem! If you have a frame- mount rear bumper that does not have any tubes, plates or other parts covering the area where the receiver tube of this hitch is located - No problem! If you have the Polaris rear bumper, this hitch will NOT fit (due to the plate at the bottom of the Polaris bumper). If you have any other aftermarket bumper with a cross-brace or a large plate that covers this area, then you're also out-of-luck. If you have one of those bumpers that has a lower mount that uses a four-bolt plate to replace the factory radius rod plate, then you can't fit any hitch. You probably also want to get rid of that bumper before you hit something and damage your rear suspension, plus that plate is probably built wrong and you will have radius rod bolt failure in your future (from joint face angularity). We've intentionally kept this "bumper fitment" section short, call if you have further questions.
The Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch is constructed using an automotive-grade, reinforced 2" receiver tube for strength, durability and proper fitment with your towing accessories. We've also added double gussets to eliminate deflection of the receiver tube when towing, and twin tow hook points for easy attachment of tow hooks or winch cables when necessary. The factory tow point is still accessible too. The tongue weight rating for this hitch is 150 lbs. This Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch installs in about 45-60 minutes. Made in USA.
This hitch features a durable black powdercoat finish. Thunderhawk Performance receiver hitches accept standard 2" automotive receiver hitch components. 2" receiver hitches are commonly used on most pick-up trucks. Many people already own these hitch bars and components, but these parts are also readily available at any large discount store or auto parts chain.
