As racers, we are always looking for that "edge". Light weight improves performance in many ways, but a broken part is a DNF (or leaves you stranded along the trail). Thunderhawk Performance looked carefully at the suspension design and dynamic loads when designing our radius rod kits, and then we selected the best materials for the application. Since the loads on the upper and lower radius rods are different, we chose to use two different materials to optimize the design of these upper and lower radius rods. In doing so, we were able to reduce the weight of the radius rods by 1.9 lbs compared to the small, stock radius rods.
We did not build a high-clearance lower radius rod design as these are inherently weaker, prone to bending & flex and many have a nasty habit of damaging the frame. A straight radius rod is superior in all circumstances except abuse (yes, bending a radius rod when you drive into a big rock is abuse). Now, if you ride creek-beds (with rocks hidden below the waterline) or if you are a rock-crawler, then we understand the need for high-clearance radius rods. But, most trail riders should consider straight radius rods for their strength and durability under normal trail conditions. Thunderhawk's radius rods are race-tested, and trail-proven! You won't find a finer set of radius rods for the RS-1.
Thunderhawk's lower radius rods are fabricated from 1.25" diameter x 0.095" wall DOM steel tubing with chrome-moly ends. DOM tubing was selected for it's strength & durability to withstand the under-car environment and normal trail exposure. The larger diameter provides additional strength and stiffness without adding much weight.
Thunderhawk's upper radius rods are made from 1.25" diameter x 0.160" wall 6061 aluminum that features swaged ends to create a one-piece rod without tooling marks from machining that can lead to cracking. This tubing was selected because it increases the strength to resist common failures (bending during suspension compression) while reducing weight.
To complete these radius rods, we also chose to use stainless steel spacer bushings which are stronger than aluminum and will not rust like steel. The rod end bearings used in this kit are the strongest available with a 19,750 lb. static load rating and they feature a high-strength 4130 chrome-moly body, a hard-chrome plated bearing and a nylon insert. The radius rods feature a durable black powdercoat finish.
But....That's only half of the equation. The next issue to be addressed was the weak single-shear radius rod mounts on the RS-1 frame. Why invest in stronger radius rods and mount them to the RS-1 with the weak factory single-shear mounts. Thunderhawk Performance was the first company to identify this weakness on the RZR and developed the first double- shear upgrade for the RZR radius rods. Thunderhawk's patent-pending double-shear design has been proven to be the superior solution to strengthening the RZR radius rods, and a Thunderhawk Double-Shear Plate is included in this RS-1 Radius Rod Kit to assure that this kit is complete and will provide the best performance and durability possible.
The Thunderhawk Double-Shear Radius Rod Plate replaces the original four-bolt stiffener plate and features additional frame mounting points (at both the top and bottom) to securely mount the Thunderhawk Double-Shear Plate directly to the frame, without relying only on the four radius rod bolts for mounting. This creates a second frame mount for the radius rods that is securely attached directly to the frame to support the rear of the radius rods. With the radius rods now supported on both the front (through the stock frame) and the rear (through the double-shear plate), we have doubled the strength of the radius rod mounts, eliminating damaging flex and stopping the problem of deforming & cracking around the radius rod mounting holes in the RS-1 frame. Thunderhawk's double-shear design provides a major benefit by increasing frame and suspension strength, and is superior to any other rear radius rod plates or cages. Thunderhawk's patent-pending double-shear mounting is the only engineered solution that actually improves the frame design and strengthens the frame to handle the suspension forces encountered in real-world off-road driving conditions, whether racing or just for regular trail-riding.
NOTE: You can upgrade this kit with Thunderhawk's Rear 2" Receiver Hitch that features this same double-shear design. Use this link to find this hitch on our website for more details :RS-1 Rear 2" Receiver Hitch
