2017 Competition Rules

Important Note:

The website for the Rolling W Ranch race track has not been updated, and the UTV class rules listed on the track website are out-of-date.  The rules listed here are the most current rules for all UTV's racing in the Thunderhawk UTV series at Rolling W Ranch.

Introduction -

Last year, a few semi-pro racers started to participate at Rolling W Ranch and there were issues with rough driving. To eliminate this problem, a new "Pro UTV" class has been created where some minor contact is tolerated. The existing classes were re-named "Sportsman UTV" and their rules were clarified to stipulate these as "no-contact" classes. This will allow regular trail riders to continue to participate with the confidence that their UTV's should not be damaged due to on-track contact.

We have also taken this opportunity to modify the Sportsman UTV class rules to better suit that racers who are participating. The previous rules were written to separate UTV's by the level of modifications to the machine (stock vs. modified). This caused some confusion during registration and also did not accommodate the smaller displacement machines that were racing. Therefore, we have changed the Sportsman UTV classes to be separated by engine displacement, with three classes as follows: Sportsman Lite (800cc & under), Sportsman Open (801cc & above) and Sportsman Turbo.

General Overview –

All UTV racing classes are reserved for factory-built, 2 or 4 passenger, 4wd UTV's available for sale through local powersports dealers. Vehicles with automotive, snowmobile, or street-bike engines are not permitted in the UTV classes.

All Sportsman classes are intended for trail-riders & amateur racers that want to race their stock or modified UTV’s. This is a “no-contact” class, and track officials will closely monitor these classes for any rough driving. Flagrant rough driving or vehicle contact will cause the driver to be black-flagged from the race. Repeated rough driving will cause the driver to be banned from the Sportsman classes and to be bumped-up to the Pro class.

The Pro UTV class is for amateur or professional racers and race teams. Any racer can choose to race in the Pro class at any time.
